Laurence Sterne. The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman [1759]. (Edited by Ian Campbell Ross). Oxford, Oxford World's Classics, 2009.

This is a long and complex text. It needs to be read slowly and carefully, pencil in hand, in its entirety before lectures commence in September. Here is the reading schedule I recommend for your preliminary reading:

  • June: Volumes 1-3
  • July: Volumes 4-6
  • August: Volumes 7-9

A second in-depth reading may then begin in September.

Always make notes in a file as you read: underline your text, extract quotations, with their page numbers for future reference. As you read, fill in this outline with the page numbers in the set edition.
